A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) arrived here on Saturday a day after all the four accused in the rape and murder of a woman veterinary doctor in Telangana were killed in a police encounter.

She suffered 90 per cent burns to her body and died late on Friday from a cardiac arrest. It said the encounter indicates that the "police personnel were not properly alert and prepared for any untoward activity" by the accused on the spot, which resulted in the death of all four. People cheered the police at the encounter site and showered rose petals on them.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who rushed to Unnao to meet the victim's family, took to twitter to blame the state government for its "hollow law and order mechanism" apart from society's collective failure that prevented justice from being delivered to the woman.

Maurya said the BJP was in support of the victim's family. We did not expect this [killing in encounter].

The 23-year-old woman's last words, according to India Today were, "I don't want to die".

Amid a raging debate on police action, the widow of one of the accused squatted on a road along with some others at her village in Narayanpet district, alleging that injustice has been done to her.

Asked how lorry drivers without criminal histories would know how to handle firearms, he said the snatched weapons were "unlocked". Reports had said the accused took her behind a line of trucks, raped, asphyxiated and then set her dead body alight on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The rape and murder of the 25-year-old near a toll plaza last week had triggered countrywide outrage, with hundreds hitting the streets and MPs seeking legal reform to foreclose options of appeal or death-row clemency for those accused of heinous crimes. Thousands have protested in several Indian cities.

A top rights group in India has launched an investigation into a police shooting of four rape-murder suspects following accusations that they were shot to assuage public anger.

Bhartiya Janata Party MP Maneka Gandhi questioned the extra-judiciary killings of the rapists.

"You can not kill people because you want to". The police fired only after initially asking the accused to surrender, the police commissioner said.

"Extrajudicial killings are not a solution to preventing rape", said Avinash Kumar, Executive Director, Amnesty International, India, in a statement to Anadolu Agency.

Speaking at an event in Jodhpur, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad urged the Chief Justice of India and other senior judges to ensure that there is a mechanism to monitor quick disposal of rape cases, saying that the women of the country are under pain and distress and crying for justice.
