Man City vs. Man United racist incident: Greater Manchester police make arrest

The incident happened as United midfielder Fred went to take a corner in the second half and appeared to be hit by an object hurled from the crowd.

Fred enjoys the support of his manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who called the incident "unacceptable" and opposing boss Pep Guardiola, who said he thought the club would "take the right decision so it doesn't happen again".

That racism has been injected deep into sports, and especially in football, was established when a spectator was spotted hurling racial abuse towards Manchester United player Fred at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday during the Manchester Derby, won 2-1 by United.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police read: "A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and remains in custody for questioning".

Supt Chris Hill said: "I hope this arrest shows that we are taking this matter extremely seriously".

"We will continue to work with Manchester City and Manchester United Football Clubs on this incident and will investigate any other lines of enquiries". Lighters were also thrown at the Brazilian.

"The club are also working with GMP regarding an instance of objects being thrown onto the field of play".

Manchester City released a statement shortly after full-time in the derby on Saturday: "The club operates a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life".

"I've seen it on video, it was Jesse and Fred, and the fella must be ashamed of himself", Solskjaer told BBC Match of the Day.

"We can't give them any attention because that's all they want".

"I've seen the video, heard from the players".

"We are all the same regardless of skin colour, hair and gender. I just want to move on".
