She was also a general election candidate for the party but she was removed from the ticket in December following a controversial by-election campaign where she linked some migrants in Ireland with the terror group Isil in a series of interviews.

Mr Varadkar cancelled this morning's meeting of Fine Gael ministers and brought Cabinet forward to 9am, fuelling fresh specuation the Dail could be dissolved today.

Media outlets and lawmakers, including independent Michael Lowry, suggested that elections would now take place on February 7, days after the United Kingdom is due to exit the European Union and begin a yearlong transition period out of the bloc.

But the clear indications are that February 7 is the preferred date.

On Tuesday Leo Varadkar will end weeks of speculation about the timing of the election when he will formally request at 2pm that the president dissolves the current parliament.

The Taoiseach was due to meet Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin to discuss the election date but it remains unclear if this will go ahead.
