2020 Oscars First Time Nominees

Issa Rae who featured in The Insecure, announced the list of 2020 Oscar nominations today. After reading off the list, nominations presenter Issa Rae, absolutely dripping in sarcasm, quipped: "Congratulations to those men".

Many fans argued that films like "The Farewell" and "Hustlers" deserved more "across the board" and were snubbed in many additional categories.

Bigelow is the only woman to win best director in the 90-year history of the Academy Awards.

Many tweets zero in on the lack of female directors recognized by the Academy-only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director, and only one has nabbed the prize (Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker" in 2010). She was clearly not impressed with the way the female directors did not get a single nomination.

Whilst Gerwig was once no longer nominated within the Best possible Director class, the "Little Ladies" filmmaker picked up a Best possible Tailored Screenplay nod, simply one in all six nominations for her retelling of the liked Lousia Would possibly Alcott novel of the similar identify. "And I guess "Little Women" directed itself". "Little Women" was also nominated for best picture and individual nominations were earned by Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh.

After nearly two decades without a female directing nominee, the Academy nominated Campion for her work on The Piano. Presenter Issa Rae who gave out the Oscar 2020 nominations make a rather scathing remark congratulating "Those Men" post female directors snub. She in the long run misplaced out to Guillermo del Toro for his Best possible Image victor "The Form of Water", and every other lady hasn't been nominated within the class since.

It's also important to note, as many people of color on Twitter have pointed out, that this year's nominations are overwhelmingly white.

Four out of the five directors nominated are white men, save for Joon-ho (whose nomination for directing a foreign language film is certainly a massive accomplishment). In 2018, Time's Up's presence at the Golden Globes - where A-list actors wore black in support of victims of sexual harassment - put pressure on the film industry to question its sexism in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, with the Time's Up campaign getting a moment of attention at the 2018 Oscars too. She was also nominated for 3 NAACP image awards for Entertainer of the Year, Outstanding Actress In A Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing In A Comedy Series.
