A teenager was taken to hospital showing signs of the coronavirus after landing at Sydney Airport overnight.

But the teenager was tested for the deadly infection and has since been discharged.

The number of confirmed cases in China stands at 1,287.

The surrounding Hubei province is also deeply affected, with almost a dozen cities enduring some sort of travel restriction.

There are fears the transmission could accelerate as hundreds of millions of Chinese travel during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, which began today, although many have cancelled their plans, with airlines and railways in China providing free refunds.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new coronavirus an "emergency in China" this week but stopped short of declaring it of global concern.

"We know we don't have any direct flights from Wuhan that go to the Anchorage airport, there is only certain places in the USA that have direct flights and those are the locations where they put the screening, the passenger screening in place", Castrodale said. That includes 17 deaths, mostly involving people who had underlying health conditions that weakened their immune systems.

As the extra personnel moved into hospitals, work continued on the construction of an emergency 1,000 bed facility for virus sufferers.

The facility will be a prefabricated structure on a 25,000 sq m lot, slated for completion February 3. The way it has already spread in multiple countries shows that its infectivity is in higher ranges.

The virus has also been detected in Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Nepal, Malaysia, France, the United States and Australia.

The country reported a confirmed case of the new coronavirus that causes pneumonia-like sickness Monday and another Friday, and said it has checked 32 other people for the new coronavirus so far with all testing negative. Things here are becoming more unsafe day by day and it might be even more hard to get out of Wuhan in the coming days than it is at present.

"He's been put in an insulated room so as to avoid any contact with the outside world".

"There is no reason for alarm in the general community", Ms Mikakos said. "That could happen anytime", said Dr. Janet Baseman, an epidemiologist and the associate dean of the University of Washington's School of Public Health. All 41 deaths have been in China, including 39 in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, and one each in Hebei and Heilongjiang provinces.

Airports around the world have stepped up screening of passengers from China, though some health officials and experts have questioned the effectiveness of such screenings and of the lockdown.

This virus has never been seen before, so it's been called 2019-nCov, for "novel coronavirus". It causes cold- and flu-like symptoms, including cough and fever and, in more severe case, shortness of breath. A spokesman for the province said numerous coronavirus symptoms are similar to those of seasonal influenza, but patients will be tested out of an abundance of caution.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the confirmation of a case in Australia had been anticipated and procedures are in place to manage the situation. All are Chinese nationals on holiday from Wuhan who arrived in the country from Singapore two days earlier.

The official death toll from the coronavirus in China has jumped to 41 from 26 a day earlier, as local media reported a doctor on the frontline of the battle to contain the virus in Wuhan city had died. The newly-identified virus is very similar to the SARS virus.
