Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate rises, payrolls fall

Employment growth in California is accelerating even if it is slowing nationally

Losses were partially offset by gains in the Trade, Transportation and Utilities (2,100) and the Construction (1,400) sectors.

Job growth slowed nationwide a year ago, but it accelerated in California as the state notched a record 118-month employment expansion.

Louisiana's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2019 rose to 4.9%, ranking it fifth highest among all states and Washington, D.C., according to the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Preliminary job estimates indicate that MA added almost 45,000 jobs in 2019". The rate hit 2.7 percent in May, based on revised numbers, which was the lowest since December 1999. "And the labor force participation rate held steady at 67.8%, 4.7% above the national average", Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta said in a news release.

Not only is the unemployment rate low but Utah's employment rate in December 2019 grew by about 3.3 percent adding more than 50,000 jobs to the economy.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.5% in December, with the nation gaining 145,000 job, the Labor Department reported January 10.

This is close to the national unemployment rate which remains at 3.5 percent, which is great news for anyone looking for a job.

However, a separate survey of employers showed seasonally adjusted non-farm payrolls dropped by nearly 10,000 in December, but still remained above 6 million.

These impressive economic indicators come after Utah had matched its lowest-ever unemployment in November.

"California's strength in technology and its economic diversity helped it to overcome the negative forces hurting the Midwest and other parts of the country more dependent on manufacturing", said Lynn Reaser, an economist at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. The nation's unemployment rate also remained unchanged in December, holding at 3.5%. That was a 1.5% rise, led by professional and business services (up 8,400) and leisure and hospitality (up 7,700).

In contrast, job growth across the United States eased to 1.4% a year ago, from 1.8% in 2018. Construction was also up - 1,400 jobs - largely driven by specialty trades, such as foundation, exterior and equipment contractors. Two counties saw a decrease in jobs: Beaver (down 2.6%) and Sevier (down 0.2%).

"In this environment now we're seeing all of those stratifications of the skill sets the education levels all coalescing to the lowest unemployment rates and hardly having much of a spread at all between those with master's degrees in an unemployment rate in those with less than a high school education and a job", says Knold. The state Employment Development Department said 3.4 million jobs have been added since the expansion began in February 2010, making up 15 percent of all jobs in the United States. That was a 2% rise, led by healthcare and social assistance (up 13,300) and professional and business services (up 6,900). Over the year, Professional, Scientific and Business Services gained 4,500 (+0.8%) jobs.

In Orange County, non-farm jobs grew by 25,400 to a total of 1.67 million. He said December marked the 92nd month the US trailed OH in job growth.

Private sector employment has decreased by 500 over the year and by 900 over the previous month. Over the year, Education and Health Services gained 23,900 (+3.0%) jobs.

Sectors losing jobs included the category of other service jobs, in which employment dropped by 900.

Other occupations with a high number of job advertisements were software developers (applications) with 1,324; first-line supervisors of retail sales workers with 1,101 ads; and registered nurses with 1,010. Local government jobs increase by 100.

In the Inland Empire, which spans the Riverside and San Bernardino districts, non-agricultural jobs rose by 30,900 to a total of 1.57 million.
