Six people in Quebec who had recently travelled to China and displayed symptoms of a respiratory virus have now all tested negative for coronavirus, Quebec's health department announced Friday.

News of the case came after Chinese authorities said they were treating 1,287 patients with the virus, while the death toll has risen to 41.

Screening at five airports in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco is checking broadly for anyone returning from China with fever, cough and other respiratory symptoms that are very common at this time of year due to the spread of influenza and other viruses, she said. As well, this person's "close contacts" are being monitored for signs of the illness but are all described as 'currently well'.

SARS, which started in China in late 2002 and killed more than 750 people, was a coronavirus.

Authorities have since imposed similar lockdowns on more than 10 cities near Wuhan as part of the ongoing containment effort.

That's the city of Wuhan's emergency response to the outbreak of the coronavirus, something Dr. Marcus Zervos with the Henry Ford Health System says presents a lot like the flu. He is in a stable condition in a Melbourne hospital.

France today has confirmed its first two cases of the virus, with one patient being hospitalised in Paris and the other in the southwestern city of Bordeaux.

Officials also said 63 other cases across 22 states are now under investigation, but that while the virus is considered a "serious public health threat", the immediate risk to the general American public is "considered low at this time".

There is no known vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

Hospitals in Wuhan grappled with a flood of patients and a lack of supplies.

It is not clear how lethal the new coronavirus is, or even whether it is as unsafe as the ordinary flu, which kills tens of thousands of people every year in the USA alone.

City officials in the capital, Beijing, and Shanghai have asked residents who return from affected areas to stay at home for 14 days to prevent the spread of the virus, local media report.

A group of researchers analyzed the first 41 patients who were infected with the new coronavirus and admitted to a hospital in Wuhan.

Zervos says the way doctors handle possible cases once they're confirmed, is quarantine.

Arwady insisted that the risk of infection for others was "low nationally and locally". A third case was announced in a statement from her ministry about three hours later.

The vast majority of the cases and all of the deaths have been in China, but it has also been detected in Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Nepal and the United States.

He said he's not personally concerned about the virus, but has heard of people buying protective masks to send to family in China and Hong Kong where shortages have been reported.

Health officials fear the transmission rate could accelerate as hundreds of millions of Chinese travel before and during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, which began on Saturday, although many have canceled their plans, with airlines and railways in China providing free refunds.

While most of the deaths have been older patients, a 36-year-old man in Hubei died on Thursday.
