Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow said senators should not pry the trial wide open to new evidence in light of the New York Times' reporting on Bolton's book manuscript that says Trump explicitly linked a hold on Ukraine aid to an investigation of Joe and Hunter Biden. Bolton quit his job with the administration (or was sacked, depending on who you believe, him or the president) and has written a soon-to-be-published book that could be relevant to the trial.

Donald Trump's lawyers argue that his actions described by his former adviser, John Bolton, left, do not represent an impeachable offence.

He is helping to defend Trump against the two articles with which the House impeached the president, one for abuse of power and other for obstruction of Congress, over the alleged Ukraine scheme. Nevertheless, Bolton's words give the sane world confirmation that the president acted with nefarious motives to undercut a fledgling democracy in a time of peril and, thereby, shame his own country.

A vote on whether or not to call witnesses in the trial is expected on Friday.

"We deal with transcript evidence, we deal with publicly available information", Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said. Impeachment, he said, requires an actual crime and a "genuine national consensus" that the president must go. "What I've said all along is, if you're going to add to the record, we're going to do it in a balanced way", Graham said.

After Starr's opening presentation in defense of the president during the impeachment trial, 1998 clips of the lawyer in which he appears to contradict his position today were resurfaced.

"There's this subtext here, which is essentially the President's defense team saying, "Yes, he's guilty, we know he's guilty, and we have to fall back on the fallback of all time which is, so what?'" said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, one of the House Democrats" impeachment managers.

They argued that in seeking to remove President Trump less than a year before the national polls, Democrats were effectively denying voters their chance to weigh in on his performance. Even before the report about Bolton's book, there was no rational argument for forgoing witness testimony. The legal team argued that Trump had legitimate reasons to be suspicious of the younger Biden's business dealings and concerned about corruption in Ukraine and that, in any event, he ultimately released the aid without Ukraine committing to investigations the Republican president wanted.

Trump has denied telling Bolton he sought to use the Ukraine aid as leverage to get Kyiv to investigate the Bidens.

"The Republicans can call who they want". "If John Bolton said this, it was only to sell a book". "They have the majority", Schumer said. The White House has had Bolton's manuscript for about a month, according to a letter from Bolton's attorney.

"Yeah, I think it's OK to talk about this kind of stuff".

White House counsel Pat Cipollone concluded by calling on senators to "end of the era of impeachment for good". Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat from MI, said Tuesday morning, before the final hours of argument, referencing Dershowitz's appearance.
