More than 100 countries across the world including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh bought Swiss encryption equipment without suspecting that foreign spies, including Central Intelligence Agency agents, would have access to their secrets, The Washington Post reported.

According to a report byThe Washington Post and German public broadcaster ZDF published on Tuesday, the company, Crypto AG, entered into a deal with America's Central Intelligence Agency in 1951 and came under its ownership in the 1970s. The project - code-named "Thesaurus" and later "Rubicon" - had been rumored for decades, but the new report is believed to be the first to confirm its existence.

"It was the intelligence coup of the century", the CIA's analysis concluded, according to the report. "Foreign governments were paying good money to the USA and West Germany for the privilege of having their most secret communications read by at least two (and possibly as many as five or six) foreign countries".

On Wednesday, Swiss officials said that they are investigating the claims made in the report to determine if the company broke any local laws, according to a Reuters report.

Additionally, US and Germany were not only the beneficiaries of the spying operation.

"America's main adversaries, including the Soviet Union and China, were never Crypto customers". The CIA's report suggests USA officials gleaned information on their Cold War foes by monitoring other countries' communications with Moscow and Beijing.

Washington Post and German public broadcaster ZDF reported their findings on Tuesday.

The Post said that none of the companies that purchased Crypto AG assets in 2018 has any "ongoing connection to any intelligence service".

Both CIA and BND have declined to comment.

The Washington Post got access to internal CIA accounts of the intelligence operation known as Rubicon.

According to the report, from 1970 the CIA and the National Security Agency together with their German partners controlled almost every aspect of the company's operations, including hiring decisions, designing its technology.
