Vietnam Quarantines Commune with 10,000 Residents Amid Virus Scare

Vietnamese authorities have placed an entire commune under quarantine for 14 days in connection with the coronavirus, with just over 10,000 locals affected.

There are 15 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Vietnam, five of them in Son Loi commune.

Son Loi, a farming region made up of several villages in northern Vietnam about 25 miles northwest of Hanoi, was placed on a lockdown that will last 14 days starting February 13.

The disease then spread to her family and her neighbours, including a three-month-old baby.

Police wearing protective facemasks amid concerns of the COVID-19 coronavirus allow a local resident to pass through a checkpoint with goods in Son Loi commune in Vinh Phuc province.

They all originated from a female worker who was sent to Wuhan in central China - where the virus originated - for training.

Authorities in Son Loi began handing out face masks after the Tet holiday ended on January 30.

The province is home to factories operated by Japan's Honda and Toyota.

It has been announced that the Chinese Grand Prix will be postponed after the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

Authorities have also set up a field hospital with 300 beds at the College of Culture and Arts in Vinh Yen Town in the province and a 200-bed facility at a military school in the same town. "We are putting in every effort and believe we'll be able to contain it".

"Over 10,000 residents of the commune will not be permitted to leave for the next 20 days, starting from today", the second of the two the officials told Reuters on Thursday.

Although 10,000 people have been quarantined, only six people have actually been confirmed to have the virus. Meanwhile, schools in the area will remain closed until February 23.

A series of villages in Vietnam were put under quarantine today after six cases of the deadly coronavirus were discovered there.

Flights to and from Vietnam are already strictly controlled.

It also suspended new tourist visas for Chinese nationals or foreigners who had been in China over the past two weeks.
