The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the 15th American case was confirmed in a person who flew to Texas for quarantine on a State Department flight from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the center of the outbreak.

The virus is believed to have emerged late a year ago at a seafood market in the city of Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.

It's a way to cope with a backlog in lab testing and a faster way to track down people in the region who had contact with those infected.

There was good news for passengers on another cruise ship that was finally allowed to dock in Cambodia after being rejected by five nations over fears of the virus, even though no cases were reported on board.

China reported 121 more deaths and 5,090 new confirmed cases.

The number of health workers with coronavirus is also now on the rise.

"So, in other words, in Hubei province only, a trained medical professional can now classify a suspected case of COVID-19 as a clinically-confirmed case on the basis of chest imaging, rather than having to have a laboratory confirmation".

The WHO said the numbers included cases going back weeks.

"I think we will find a vaccine", she said. The uptick was attributed to the new criteria in Hubei.

Coronavirus has killed six health workers in China and infected more than 1,700 since the outbreak began, Beijing said today.

Although the increase in deaths is alarming, the corresponding jump in diagnoses overall suggests the mortality rate is not worse than initially feared.

Residents were told to "self-quarantine or go to designated venues to quarantine" after returning to the Chinese capital from holidays. "You'd like to have some sustained metrics that are comprehensible and relatively easy to follow", Dr. Schaffner said.

The government explained the spike was due to a change in how cases are tabulated - the total will now include "clinically diagnosed cases" - people who demonstrate all the symptoms of Covid-19 but have either been unable to access a test or are believed to have falsely tested negative. Hong Kong and the Philippines have each reported one.

The biggest cluster of cases outside China is on a cruise ship quarantined off Japan's coast, where 218 infections have now been confirmed.

Outside China, there are 447 cases in 24 countries and two deaths.

The passengers cheered as they walked toward buses to take them to the airport and waved goodbye to other passengers watching from the ship's deck.

About 55,748 people were being treated, while 1,380 people have died of the coronavirus that emerged in December past year in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province.

It said it had notified the World Health Organization and the patient had been placed in isolation in a hospital. Two additional Wuhan evacuees in California have tested positive.

On Tuesday, top Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan said the epidemic should peak in China this month before subsiding.

Heilongjiang province in the northeast reported two new deaths, with the other fatalities in the provinces of Anhui and Henan and the municipality of Chongqing.

The outbreak was traced to a live animal market in Wuhan, though scientists are still exploring its origins and what species might have served as a natural reservoir for the pathogen.

Wuhan has been hit hard by COVID-19 because the outbreak started in Hubei and spread locally.

Though the risk of the disease remains low for the general American public, the threat internationally is high, the CDC said.
