Coronavirus continues to make the headlines... But doctors say the flu quietly hospitalizes thousands of people in the united states every year

Kailey Bibber, a sophomore, said the recent outbreak of the coronavirus has been distorted by the media.

Locally, said Gerrard, flu is still active.

"The flu has spread rapidly through the school, and with so many kids and teachers calling out sick, we believe it is a good idea to take the day to disinfect everything", the school wrote in a Facebook post.

"Although the corona- virus has killed a lot of people in a short period of time, I think it's super important to keep in mind how many people that the flu kills every year", said Bibber.

The global death toll of the virus is more than 1,000, according to unofficial statistics compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

And this particular strain of flu, according to the numbers, has been deadly to an even wider range of people. I feel better-I'm not sick without it. "Students need to be intentional about staying healthy".

According to the CDC, "most of the flu vaccines are made using an egg-based vaccine by private manufacturers who inject candidate vaccine viruses into a fertilized hen's egg".

The CDC recommends getting a flu shot if you have not already, and just taking everyday precautions such as washing your hands. "I've heard different things, some people say yeah it's not that unsafe and others say you die quickly", added Thomas from Eau Claire.

Students on campus have their own remedies for getting through the flu season.

Since the beginning of flu season in October 2019 and February 1, 2020, there have been as many as 31 million cases of the flu and between 12,000-30,000 flu deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

"So the best way to protect those young children is to have everyone who comes in contact with that infant receive a flu vaccine and to also limit the infant's exposure to large groups of individuals", McBee said. Two months later, it was the first pediatric death of the flu season in the western part of the state.

She added her daughter was born prematurely and was unable to receive vaccinations until her immune system became stronger.

According to the agency, approximately 173.3 million doses of the flu vaccine have been administered in the U.S. this season.
