Former TERI Chief And Environmentalist RK Pachauri Dies At 79

Pachauri had multiple cardiac issues and doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute said he had been put on life support three days ago.

Pachauri, who had been admitted to the Escorts Heart Institute in the national capital had suffered from a prolonged cardiac ailment.

The environmentalist had suffered a heart stroke in Mexico in July previous year, PTI has further reported. "Pachauri had also undergone an open heart surgery but his condition didn't improve", said a source, adding that Pachauri was taken home around 7pm on Thursday, where he breathed his last.

"His courageous leadership allowed climate change to be recognized world over as the most pressing issue confronting the world and launched a new era of worldwide deliberations and actions", it said.

TERI, short for New Delhi-based The Energy and Resources Institute, expressed "immense sadness" over Dr Pachauri's death.

On February 13, 2015, police registered an FIR after a former TERI employee lodged a complaint against Pachauri, accusing him of sexual harassment, molestation among other offences.

Pachauri had to step down from his post at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI, Terry) because he was accused of sexually harassing a former female colleague. He played a pivotal role in making us a leading organisation in the sustainability space.

Pachauri had a distinguished career whose highest point came in October 2007 when he collected the Nobel Peace Prize as the head of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, jointly with former US Vice-President Al Gore.

"Dr Pachauri's contribution to global sustainable development is unparalleled", said TERI Chairman Nitin Desai. Pachauri, however, denied the allegations saying his emails and mobile phone were hacked.

Charges were framed against him in 2018 and Pachauri had pleaded not guilty. "His leadership of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change laid the ground for climate change conversations today".

Significantly, the nation's main environmentalist Rajendra Kumar Pachauri was born on 20 August 1940 in Nainital.
