The incident occurred after Kassian and Cernak got tangled up along the boards in the first period and fell to the ice, with Kassian delivering a kick to Cernak's chest while lying underneath him.

The Lighting got off to a quick start in the first period and outside of outshooting the visitors 14-10, hit a goalpost and a crossbar in the same sequence.

Patrick Maroon gave Tampa Bay the lead before the second was five minutes old. He nudged a puck from behind the net off Edmonton goaltender Mike Smith's back and just over the line for his seventh goal of the season.

Tampa Bay forward Yanni Gourde came back with a goal on a shorthanded breakaway. It was the second game in a row the Oilers have allowed a shorthanded goal.

The Oilers came on in the third and Draisaitl had the best chance to tie the game, but was robbed on a one-timer at the side of the net by Vasilevskiy.

Tampa Bay's Cedric Paquette sealed it with an empty netter in the final minute.

Smith made 34 saves and lost in regulation time for the first time since December 20.

"[Smith] was awesome", Oilers forward Riley Sheahan said. "He made some unbelievable saves". If we put a couple of those in the back of the net, it's a completely different game.

"He's just an ultra-competitive guy - ultra-competitive", Tippett said. "He wants to win bad". So I don't know.

"They were a fast team", Jones said "We battled hard, we had a lot of looks, we only gave up two".

Draisaitl had an assist for his 90th point of the season.

Edmonton Oilers forward Zack Kassian called his apparent kick on Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Erik Cernak "reactionary" following his team's loss on Thursday.
