Government reshuffle: Sajid Javid resigns as Chancellor

Rishi Sunak - who has served as chief secretary to the Treasury since the summer of 2019 - is replacing Javid in the top finance role.

Today, the Prime Minister insisted to Sajid Javid that all he wanted was a Osborne/Cameron relationship but Mr Javid and his allies in the Treasury believed what was on offer from No. 10 was a very different (servant/master).

George Eustice was promoted to environment secretary from his previous role in the same department.

Mr Sunak will take the job having agreed to a joint Number 10-Number 11 team of aides.

Former Brexit minister Steve Barclay took over Sunak's position as chief secretary to the Treasury.

"The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of Rt Hon Rishi Sunak as Chancellor of the Exchequer", Downing Street said in an official press release.

The UK cabinet culling prompted accusations online that Johnson had "lost control", with Ian Blackford, the SNP leader in Westminster, suggesting the PM had become "embroiled in an ego battle between his de-facto deputy Dominic Cummings" and Tory MPs like Javid.

- Esther McVey lost her job as housing minister.

More on the reshuffle that saw Sajid Javid resign as chancellor on Thursday.

Alok Sharma was promoted from global development to become the new business secretary, and he will also be minister for the COP26 United Nations climate summit, due to take place in Glasgow in November.

Sunak is the second person to join Johnson's cabinet, the first being Priti Patel, the Home secretary. Others were promoted, including Suella Braverman to the position of attorney general and Anne-Marie Trevelyan to the post of global development secretary.

"You have been such an effective secretary of state for Northern Ireland at a time of real challenge and risk", he said.

Newcomers at the cabinet meeting on Friday will include Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who replaces Alok Sharma as global development secretary; Amanda Milling, who is minister without portfolio and chairwoman of the Conservative Party; and Suella Braverman, who takes on the role of attorney general after the prime minister asked Mr Cox to step down.

Over the course of the day, Johnson sacked a number of his ministers.

Former culture secretary Baroness Nicky Morgan had already said she was leaving her role, while Leadsom, Villiers and McVey were all sacked.

"What the Prime Minister giveth, the Prime Minister taketh away: just over six months ago, I was delighted to be invited by the Prime Minister to return to government after three years on the backbenches".
