Second Case of New Coronavirus Confirmed Among China Evacuees

Coronavirus: US evacuee mistakenly released from hospital

The newest case is the 14th confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the United States and the eighth case in California.

In other words, Redfield said that an infected person not showing symptoms could still transmit the virus to someone else based on information from his colleagues in China.

Americans experiencing coronavirus symptoms may have to wait longer to receive a diagnosis from state health officials after the CDC revealed Wednesday that the 200 COVID-19 testing kits issued across the country last week may return inconclusive - neither positive nor negative - results.

"It's concerning that there is a high number of cases", she said.

The US Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) will expand an existing partnership with New Jersey-based Janssen Research & Development, part of Johnson & Johnson, HHS said yesterday in a news release.

"Things may not always go as smoothly as we may like", Dr. Messonnier said.

According to the CDC, more than 600 people evacuated from Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, remain quarantined in the US.

"Obviously, a state wouldn't want to be doing this test and using it to make clinical decisions if it isn't working as well, as perfectly, at the state as it is at [the] CDC", she said, adding the problem was linked to a certain ingredient in the test, as per The New York Times.

As a result, the CDC is re-manufacturing the component they believe to be at fault for the imperfect testing and will redistribute the test component.

The virus can cause fever, coughing, wheezing and pneumonia.

The details about the mix-up happened the same day 195 evacuees were cleared to leave March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California, after clearing their final screening.

The person was a "solo traveler" who arrived on a chartered flight February 7 from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, officials said.

When no results were reported back, CDC staffers mistakenly gave UC San Diego Health the results of other patients who tested negative.

The patients did not infect one another, and fewer people who have been in China are now coming back to the US.

So far, airport screening has processed more than 30,000 travelers from China who have passed through 11 airports.
