The new 2021 Supra 2.0 becomes the entry model, slotting between the Toyota 86 and the Supra 3.0 with the inline-six that launched previous year.

The increased power output also increases performance with the last year's 0 to 60 sprint of 4.1 seconds dropping to 3.9 seconds, though top speed remains electronically limited at 155 miles per hour. This allows the four-cylinder Supra to scoot from zero to 60 miles per hour in five seconds flat and onto a top speed of 155 miles per hour, neither of which are shabby specs for a four-banger sports vehicle.

From a weight perspective, the Supra 2.0 is more than 200 pounds lighter than the 3.0-liter, coming in at 3,181 pounds. Speaking at the 2021 Supra launch event in Daytona, Toyota Supra Chief Engineer Tatsuya Tada said retrofitting earlier cars to 2021 spec was possible, but it's not as simple as one might think. Instead of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, this Supra is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (sourced from BMW, just like the six).

Toyota didn't give us a manual transmission with this update, as the four-cylinder Supra will only be available with the same ZF eight-speed automatic as the inline-six is. Having two fewer cylinders helps save weight, as do smaller 13-inch front brake rotors with single-piston calipers, and the lack of an active rear differential and adaptive suspension.

Besides a lower price point, the four-cylinder Supra will also offer improved fuel economy, though no mileage figures have been released yet.

These numbers come as a result of an new dual-branch exhaust manifold and in spite of a reduced compression ratio of 10.2:1 instead of 11:1, the latter due to a new piston design.

On top of the extra power, Toyota also re-tuned the chassis by increasing roll resistance by adding aluminum bracing in the engine bay between the strut towers and radiator support, fitting new bump stops and tweaking the damper tuning.

While at it, they also adapted the programming for the electric power steering (EPS), Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Active Differential to the hardware changes. Toyota has announced the new addition to the Supra sports auto lineup ahead of NASCAR's Daytona 500, where 43 of its race cars will compete this Sunday. The front brake calipers on turbo-6 Premium models and the A91 Edition will be painted red and feature a Toyota Supra logo. Everyone would rather have the 3.0-liter model, which receives serious upgrades for the 2021 model year. Inside the limited-edition cars will be covered in black suede leather-trimmed seats with blue contrast stitching, a trunk mat, and key gloves. Lastly, there's a tech update, as Toyota has made the 8.8-inch infotainment standard, discontinuing the 6.5-inch screen.
