Voters split on President Donald Trump impeachment trial acquittal

In retaliation, Iran fired several missiles at US bases in Iraq, causing some injuries but killing no one.

Kaine said at minimum, service members deserve a debate on whether the USA should enter into new wars.

Trump's Iran policy is succeeding precisely because he is willing to use military force.

"We can certainly comply with the Presidential Records Act and serve the president in however he'd like to have his conversations with foreign leaders", O'Brien told reporters Thursday evening outside the White House. "And with President Trump taking steps toward risky conflict with Iran - without any consultation with Congress - we need to reassert the responsibility given to us", Democratic Representative Eliot Engel, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said in support of the legislation. But he has repeatedly shown otherwise - and that is a matter for voters to decide, anyway.

"Every Republican Senator except [Mitt] Romney, many highly religious people, all very smart, voted against the Impeachment Hoax". Tim Kaine of Virginia, won bipartisan support. But American presidents have had wide latitude to unilaterally order military action in response to imminent threats and sudden crises.

Congress has let its power to declare war granted by the Constitution "atrophy" by failing to exercise it, Sen.

And Democrats never cared about those powers, anyway.

The three senators seeking the Democratic nomination for president - Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA - all returned to the Capitol from campaigning and backed the war powers resolution.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) initially pursued a type of nonbinding House resolution in early January that did not require the president's signature and would have been largely symbolic.

Kaine and other supporters said the resolution, which passed 55-45, was not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead was an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war.

Trump's moves to expand the powers of the presidency in the wake of the impeachment debacle make clear that that the Trump administration and its drive toward dictatorship can not be opposed through the Democratic Party.

At the center of the impeachment controversy was $391 million in withheld military aid to Ukraine, an ally to the United States, to assist its border war with Russian Federation. Iran will only be deterred from future attacks if they know that the president has the full authority to respond if they or their proxies kill Americans. It includes a loophole rendering meaningless the requirement for congressional authorization for military action against Iran.

Trump says that any discipline of Vindman is up to the Pentagon but that he expects commanders to "take a look" at his conduct.

The resolution, authored by Democratic Sen. "And so, when the president said that continued support would be based on 'X, ' that essentially changed".

Before the vote, Manchin tried to get his fellow senators to agree to censure Trump for withholding aid to Ukraine and pressing the country to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden, but his effort failed. "Sends a very bad signal", Trump said on Twitter.
