WHO Chief: Ebola Outbreak in DRC Remains Public Health Emergency

WHO encouraged by fight against DRC EBOLA outbreak

The U.N. health agency on Wednesday said it was extending its global emergency designation for the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo but said the sharp decline in cases was "extremely positive".

Earlier on July 17 of 2019, WHO declared the Ebola virus disease outbreak in DRC a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The current Ebola epidemic, which was declared in August 2018, has killed more than 2,300 people in the east of the DR Congo.

"As I said yesterday, as long as there is a single case of Ebola in an area as insecure and unstable as the eastern DRC, the potential remains for a much larger epidemic", Ghebreyesus said.

Rebels have repeatedly attacked health workers struggling to contain the outbreak and people in communities who've never experienced the illness before remain wary of worldwide aid workers. "There have only been 3 cases in the past week, and no cases in the past 3 days", the World Health Organization chief told reporters. "There have only been three cases in the past week and no cases in the past three days", Tedros said.

The decision is ultimately up to the WHO's Emergency Committee - a group of worldwide experts that meets every three months once an emergency has been declared.

The health emergency designation past year came a few days after a patient was diagnosed with the virus in the provincial capital Goma - the first case in a major urban hub.

Much of the outbreak has struck regions of Congo described as war zones and health workers have been under repeated attacks from numerous rebel groups and from communities wary of worldwide aid workers.

The ADF, blamed for the deaths of more than 1,000 civilians in Beni since October 2014, began as an Islamist-rooted rebel group in Uganda that opposed President Yoweri Museveni. We hope that we have succeeded by giving you the full details and information.
