Southland braces for impact as ex-tropical cyclone Uesi bears down on New Zealand

Cyclone Uesi had previously been a Category 3 storm when it passed the eastern coast of New Caledonia on February 12.

Lord Howe Island was battered by wind gusts of up to 150 km/h on February 14 as it was hit by the remnants of Cyclone Usei.

"The Community and Visitors to Lord Howe Island should commence preparations, especially securing boats and property", Australia's Bureau of Meteorology stated online. Air pressure isn't likely to change much between today and Sunday.

There has been several water rescues in the Queensland state southeast, local media reported.

"All things being equal, the people that can't get off the island are cancelled out to some degree by ones that can't return here, but there's a lot of adjustment that goes on to accommodate those people", Lord Howe Island Board chief executive Peter Adams told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Just a week on from severe flooding that saw multiple towns evacuated, more heavy rain is forecast this weekend as Uesi tracks down the South Island.
