Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe Bryant were among official finalists for the 2020 class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Joining the three NBA legends as finalists are Baylor coach Kim Mulkey, NBA coach Rudy Tomjanovich, Division II women's coach Barbara Stevens, longtime men's college coach Eddie Sutton, and WNBA player Tamika Catchings.

Friday the Hall of Fame announced the eight finalists for induction into the Hall of Fame this year, and - as we had known for years - this is a stacked class. "The untimely passing of Kobe Bryant has left us in a state of reflective mourning and we're proud to honor his legacy while also recognizing seven other individuals who have meant so much to our game".

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star in his first year of eligibility, is considered a certainty to join the ranks of the sport's immortals by being enshrined at the honor shrine in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Bryant, fourth all time in NBA scoring, played for the Los Angeles Lakers during an illustrious 20-year career that was highlighted by five NBA championships, two NBA Finals MVPs and one league MVP. Garnett also won Defensive Player of the Year that season and had a distinguished career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, winning the MVP award in 2003-04. The nine-time All-Defensive first-team selection won the 2008 title with the Celtics, led the league in rebounds for four consecutive seasons and won the league's MVP award in 2004 after leading the National Basketball Association in points, field goals made and rebounds. Other recipients this year are Jim Gray and TNT's "Inside the NBA" show.

Those finalists will be voted on and the Hall of Fame class of 2000 will be announced during the NCAA Final Four. The enshrinement ceremony will take place at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. on August 29.
