Nikon Unveils the D6 with the 'Most Powerful AF System in Nikon History'

After a development announcement a year ago and a lackluster teaser campaign, Nikon has lastly unveiled their newest flagship full-body DSLR for sports activities shooters and photojournalists: The Nikon D6.

At its core, the D6 uses the same 20.8MP resolution full-frame CMOS sensor as its predecessor that maxes out at the same 4K/30p when shooting video, and you won't find any on-sensor phase detect points for improved Live View capabilities. "The rapid movements of athletes can be beautifully captured by its quick reactions, without hesitation or interruption in the crucial moments", said John Young, general manager of marketing for Nikon Australia.

The Nikon D6 has a 105 point all cross tiff autofocus system for sport and action photography. The sensor can shoot at up to 14 FPS full autofocus and exposure tracking, or 10.5 FPS in a noiseless mode that uses an electronic shutter. The Nikon D5 had a 153-point AF system with a mixture of regular and more precise cross-type sensors, whereas the D6 swaps this for a 105-point all cross-type array, all of which are individually selectable, and powered by an AF system which Nikon says is faster than ever before. The D6 also sports an expanded focus detection range which increases the detection area for single point AF and dynamic area AF, making it easier to achieve focus on a subject even when slightly outside the focus point. Improved autofocus sensitivity gives the D6 the ability to focus down to light levels of -4.5EV. It has a RGB sensor of 180k pixels which is compatible with the EXPEED 6 image processing engine. The D6 can also shoot completely silent for sensitive situations, capturing full resolution at 10.5 fps.

Other elements of the new DSLR worth mentioning include the ability to record in 4K UHD, along with a native ISO range of 100 to 102 400. For faster frame rates, the Nikon D6 is able to take 2-megapixel images at approx. Just like its predecessor, the D5, the Nikon D6 has a weather-resistant magnesium alloy body. For the ones who have to transfer images at the shortest turnaround time, there is the 1000BASE_T Ethernet port that is 15% faster in comparison to the D5. Nikon has released a whole series of images taken with the D6, which you can see below.

Nikon has additionally added a bunch of workflow enhancements for the professionals. It also uses the latest and fastest memory card formats, with dual card slots that support both XQD and CFexpress cards.

The new Nikon D6 will be available in April 2020 for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $6,499.95* for the body only configuration.
